Cisco announces next-gen ISR router

October 21, 2017

Following the long-term success of its G1 Integrated Service Router Cisco is now releasing the G2, which will provide enhanced capabilities for video-conferencing and virtualised services.

The new routers include a video-ready media engine, scalable audio-conferencing, up to 1 terabyte of video storage per module, a multi-gigabit switching fabric for high performance, and WAN optimization and application acceleration.

The use of video is expected to increase rapidly and the ISR G2 routers also offer new video digital signal processors for the delivery of TelePresence, surveillance, collaboration and digital signage.

The routers come in three versions – the 1900 ISR G2 replaces the 1800 ISR G1, the 2900 ISR G2 replaces the 2800 ISR G1, and the 3900 ISR G2 replaces the 3800 ISR G1.

As you would expect the higher the number the more features are offered.

The ISR G2 is said to offer five times the performance of the ISR G1, facilitating the use of video, VoIP, and virtualisation, and allowing these service to be separated from other traffic with VLANs.
